The prep is the job

A coating is optically clear and permanent for its service life, which means it locks in whatever is under it. Swirls, holograms and water spots sealed beneath a coating are there until the coating comes off.

So the work runs in this order: full wash and chemical decontamination, clay to pull embedded contaminants out of the clear coat, then machine paint correction to remove swirls and light scratches. Only then does the coating go on, panel by panel, and cure.

What a coating actually does

It is worth being precise, because coatings are oversold everywhere.

• Hydrophobic — water sheets off rather than sitting, so the car dries with fewer spots and stays cleaner between washes.
• Chemically resistant — bird lime, tree sap and road salt have a harder time etching the clear coat, provided they are removed reasonably promptly.
• UV stable — slows the oxidation that dulls red and black paint in Southern California sun.
• Easier to wash — the biggest day-to-day difference. Less contact means fewer new swirls.
• Not armour — a coating will not stop a rock chip or a key. That is what paint protection film is for.
