Why calipers need a high-temperature finish

Brake calipers get hot — hot enough that ordinary paint discolours, chalks and flakes within months. Anything applied to a caliper has to be rated for sustained heat cycling and has to resist brake dust and cleaner at the same time.

That is why the prep matters as much as the colour. A caliper that is still carrying baked-on brake dust will shed whatever is put on top of it.

What the job involves

• Wheels off, caliper cleaned. Years of brake dust and road grime are removed and the surface is degreased properly.
• Masking. Bleed nipples, pistons, dust boots and brake lines are masked. Nothing that moves or seals gets coated.
• Finish applied. High-temperature coating in the colour you choose, built up in even coats.
• Optional lettering. Maker's name or model script where the caliper carries it.
• Rebuild and cure. Wheels back on and torqued, with cure time before hard driving.

Colours that work

Red is the default for a reason — it reads instantly behind almost any wheel. Yellow suits darker cars and bright silver wheels. Gloss black is the subtle choice, tidying up tired calipers without announcing anything. Custom colours matched to a wrap or to a brand's motorsport palette are straightforward.
