Why powder coat instead of painting wheels

Wheels live in the worst environment on the car: constant heat cycling from the brakes, corrosive brake dust, road salt and whatever the kerb does to them.

Powder coating is applied as a dry electrostatic powder and then cured in an oven, producing a thicker, harder and more chip-resistant film than a liquid wheel paint. It does not run, it covers edges evenly, and it holds colour under UV rather than fading.

The process

Refinishing a wheel properly means stripping it back first — anything less and the new finish fails at the old one's weak points.

• Tyres off. Wheels are stripped bare. Coating around a fitted tyre is not refinishing.
• Strip. The old finish is removed completely, chemically or by media blasting.
• Repair. Kerb rash and gouges are filled and sanded back to profile before anything is applied.
• Coat and bake. Powder is applied electrostatically and cured in an oven so it flows into one continuous film.
• Rebuild. Tyres refitted, balanced and torqued.

Finishes

Gloss black, satin black and matte black are the volume choices. Bronze, gunmetal, silver and white all come up regularly, and a two-tone — machined face with a coloured barrel — is achievable with masking.

Because the wheels come off the car anyway, this is also the natural moment to have calipers painted so the whole corner of the car is finished at once.
